US President Donald Trump on Monday, March 26, nominated Rebecca Slaughter, chief counsel to Senate Minority Leader Chuck Schumer, to the Federal Trade Commission (FTC), the White House announced in a statement.
Slaughter, if confirmed by the Senate, would hold the position for the rest of a seven-year term ending in 2022. She would become the second Democratic commissioner along with Rohit Chopra, a former official at the Consumer Financial Protection Board.
Schumer, (Democrat-New York) recommended Kelly Slaughter for the post. In a statement, he said his chief counsel “will make an excellent FTC commissioner.”
“Throughout her time in public service she has worked tirelessly and effectively,” Schumer said. “I’m confident that following her confirmation, those qualities will make her a tremendous addition to the commission.”
Kelly Slaughter has been on Schumer’s staff since 2009. She has advised the senator on several issues, including competition and consumer protection—the main focus of the Federal Trade Commission.
A graduate of Yale Law School and former editor of the Yale Law Journal, Kelly Slaughter was associate at Sidney Austin LLP’s Washington office.
