Spain: Canedo, Ortiz y Bacigalupo join the CNMC

Spain’s Council of Ministers approved two new Commissioners and ratified one standing Commissioner to the National Commission on Markets and Competition (CNMC). The make-up of the full Commission will then be voted on by Parliament before being decreed into Law.

Dr. Mariano Bacigalupo, nominated by socialist party, PSOE, and Ms. Pilar Canedo, with the support of upstart party, Ciudadanos, are the new members, while Ms. María Ortiz will continue to serve a further term. Both new members are considered experienced public servants with knowledge of the field. Bacigalupo has served in the National Energy Commission and Ms. Canedo currently heads the Basque Competition Authority.

The approval is a step in implementing a new Government structure to regulate and oversee competition and networks by means of two Independent Administrative Authorities. Each Authority would form out of the chambers of the CNMC, one shall be in charge of competition, the other of regulation.
