South Africa: Competition Commission to examine SABMiller deal

The Competition Commission says it’s sure that it is going to have to examine the SABMiller Deal with Anheuser-Busch InBev before it can go through.

This morning AB InBev confirmed it had made a formal offer of a $106 billion for SABMiller.

But the deal still has to be checked by regulators around the world. Once the deal goes through, the new company will produce one third of the world’s beer.

Acting Deputy Competition Commissioner Hardin Ratshisusu says he’s certain they’ll have to look at this deal.

“It’s a big deal that ought to be notified. We’ll definitely have to look into it and I think if you look at it, just look the law itself; we don’t just look at the competition impact, we also look at the public impact on the sector.”
