Russia/Belarus: Watchdogs to press mobile operators to end roaming charges

The Russian and Belarusian competition watchdogs can put pressure on mobile operators in their countries to offer free roaming services, reported Tass citing Anatoliy Golomolizin, the head of the Russian federal competition regulator FAS. The operators need to reduce interconnect rates simultaneously, in order to support a reduction in end-user rates.

The positions of Russia and Belarus on roaming have become closer, according to Oleg Ivanov, the deputy minister in the Russian Ministry of Communications. A decision on the issue could be taken by the end of the year.
