French broadcasting giants TF1 and M6 said they would not change their merger plans to establish what commentators say could lead to the creation of a media colossus, despite competition watchdog, AdlC, saying it would pose “significant competition problems”.
The proposed merger of two French broadcasting giants is again in the news.
In May 2021, the country’s two leading broadcasters announced that they wanted to merge to have more clout in the face of American platforms such as Netflix, Amazon Prime or Disney+ and to better adapt to new audiovisual consumption habits in France.
Competition watchdog AdlC’s investigative report, which does not affect AdIC’s final antitrust decision on the merger, thus comes as a huge blow to both broadcasters.
