Less than a month after launching in the European Union’s de facto capital, Sullivan & Cromwell has boosted its fledgling Brussels office with the hire of the European Commission’s former deputy director-general for competition, the firm announced Wednesday.
Götz Drauz, an EU and German antitrust law expert at Wilson Sonsini Goodrich & Rosati, has joined the New York-based firm as Of Counsel. Drauz also previously headed the Merger Task Force at the European Commission, the executive arm of the European Union.
Sullivan chairman Joseph Shenker described Drauz as “one of the most experienced EU antitrust practitioners” and said that the firm’s hiring of former enforcement lawyers on both sides of the Atlantic would prove “invaluable to our clients as they navigate the increasingly challenging and interconnected global merger clearance process.”
The move reunites Drauz with former Wilson Sonsini antitrust partner Michael Rosenthal, who joined Sullivan & Cromwell last month to establish the firm’s Brussels base. Rosenthal and Drauz were both part of the team that launched Wilson Sonsini’s Brussels office back in 2011, having arrived from Hunton & Williams and Shearman & Sterling, respectively.
