EU: Vestager zeroed in on Lufthansa’s Air Berlin bid

The European Commissioner for Competition Margrethe Vestager said Friday, December 8, that she had “deep competition concerns” about Deutsche Lufthansa’s bid for Air Berlin, Reuters reports.

“There is a risk that… Lufthansa becomes de facto a monopoly on a significant number of routes,” Ms Vestager said at a press conference, according to Reuters.

The statement comes after Lufthansa made concessions to its bid earlier this week, offering to forego airport slots. A person familiar with the matter told Reuters that the carrier would have to do more to satisfy regulatory concerns.

The EU competition authority is now seeking feedback from rivals and interested parties.
