The European Commission has opened a formal investigation to assess whether supply agreements between Qatar Petroleum and European liquefied natural gas (LNG) importers have hindered the free flow of gas within the European Economic Area (EEA), it announced on Thursday, June 21.
The Commission said it will further investigate whether Qatar Petroleum’s long-term agreements—typically running for 20 or 25 years—with LNG importers in the EEA contain territorial restrictions, which refers to bans or restrictions on the onward sale of gas.
“Such clauses may harm competition and prevent consumers from enjoying the benefits of an integrated European energy market,” EU Competition Commissioner Margrethe Vestager said in a statement.
