Since 1 July 2005 Pieter Kalbfleisch has been Chairman of the Board of the Netherlands Competition Authority (NMa). From 22 September 2003 until July 2005, Pieter Kalbfleisch was the Director-General of the NMa.
Mr. Kalbfleischbegan his career as an attorney-at-law in Arnhem and later joined the bench of the Court of Haarlem, specializing in criminal and civil law. In 1986 he was appointed Deputy Presiding Judge of the Court of The Hague, where he also specialised in family and juvenile law. Until his appointment as the Director-General of the NMa in 2003, he was the Chairman of the Arbitration Board of 'Overbruggingsfonds Toneel' (Bridging Fund for Drama) in The Hague and Chairman of the Professional Football Appeals Board of KNVB (Royal Dutch Football Federation) in Zeist. He was also a member of the Executive Board of 'Nederlandse Vereniging voor Rechtspraak' (Netherlands Association for the Judiciary). In addition, he served as an arbitrator for 'Nederlands Arbitrage Instituut' (Netherlands Arbitration Institute) in Rotterdam.
He has also been a law tutor and advisor to the Business Studies course and Management Programmes in Haarlem and a tutor in Insolvency Law and the Law of Procedure with the Dutch Bar Association. He is Chairman of the Board of The Hague Philharmonic (Residentie Orkest), and a member of the Board of Governors of the Europa Institute of Leiden University.
