Alejandro Faya

Dr. Faya's background includes the public, private and academic sectors. His area of practice focuses on economic and international law, particularly foreign investment, arbitration, regulation, competition and public policy. In the public sector he was Deputy Director-General for International Affairs as well as senior legal counsel for regulation & competition affairs at the Mexican Ministry of Economy. In the former capacity, he negotiated and concluded as chief negotiator - 11 international investment agreements.

He later served as legal advisor to the Special Commission for Competitiveness at the Chamber of Deputies of the Federal Congress, where he produced various law initiatives. He is, as of June 2011, Director General of Foreign Investment at the Ministry of Economy. In the private sector has been member or of-counsel of prestigious law firms, including Camil Abogados, Lopez Velarde, Heftye & Soria and Wöss & Partners. Also, as an independent consultant, he has worked for the United Nations (UNCTAD), the Asia-Pacific Economic Cooperation Mechanism (APEC), the Organization of American States (OAS) and various international consultancy firms. At UNCTAD, for several years he contributed as resource person in the training of officials from all over the world in matters related to investment treaty negotiation and arbitration. In the academic sector he is Professor of Law at Universidad Iberoamericana, where he teaches both at graduate and postgraduate levels. He has also taught at Universidad Nacional Autónoma de México (UNAM).
