US: DOJ taps Ex-AG for Bayer-Monsanto deal

A DC district judge on Tuesday, August 14, appointed former US Attorney General and district court chief judge Michael B. Mukasey to serve as the monitoring trustee for the US Department of Justice agreement that allowed BayerAG’s planned US$62 billion purchase of Monsanto to proceed.

As Attorney General from November 2007 to January 2009, he oversaw the US Department of Justice and advised on critical issues of domestic and international law. Judge Mukasey joined Debevoise as a partner in the litigation practice in New York in February 2009, focusing his practice primarily on internal investigations, independent board reviews and corporate governance.

Bayer as the company completed the buyout of Monsanto in June for about US$66 million.
