On Tuesday, February 27, the Competition Commission of South Africa announced that it has referred 28 media companies to the Competition Tribunal for prosecution on charges of price fixing and the fixing of trading conditions, which were found to be in contravention of the Competition Act.
The Companies were referred to the Competition Tribunal after being investigated by the Commission.
The investigation reportedly found that the media houses offered similar, larger discounts for bigger advertisers, or advertisers belonging to an industry body group. But non-members were offered smaller discounts.
The Commission reportedly said this restricted competition between the companies as they did not independently determine discounts offered to advertisers. The companies could face paying as much as 10% of their turnover, eNCA reported.
