Spain: Madrid targets Uber’s new service

Authorities in Madrid asked Spain’s regulator, the CNMC, to probe Uber’s new low-cost airport service and whether it is a form of unfair competition.

Last year, the CNMC asked the government to remove the ban on Uber’s services. After returning, Uber recently offered rides from the airport to Madrid’s city center at a greatly reduced rate. Standard taxi rates for the trip are €30 (US$35) and Uber is offering the same service at a rate of only €15-€29 (US$17.5-$33.80).

Madrid’s city hall claims that “(Uber’s) tariffs may violate several articles of the Law of Unfair Competition and consumer rights if they are below the cost of providing the service.”
