Sony Corporation has announced that it will divest its battery manufacturing operations during the third quarter of 2017, in a deal valued at roughly ¥17.5 billion (US$156 million). The operation has been postponed several times from the originally scheduled closing date of March, 2017 due to prolonged antitrust probes overseas.
The buyer, Kyoto-based Murata Manufacturing Co, will take over two domestic factories producing lithium-ion batteries for smartphones and digital cameras, as well as factories in China and Singapore.
Murata will also take on around 8,500 employees working in Japan and abroad in the battery business.
