Starting on Saturday, US Airways and American Airlines will complete the final steps of their merger, creating the nation’s biggest domestic carrier. The final US Airways flight, Flight 1939, named for the year US Air’s predecessor, All American Aviation, launched, left San Francisco Friday 31 minutes late and headed to Philadelphia. American Airlines and US Airways merged in 2013 and have already combined their frequent flyer programs.
The Wall Street Journal reports. For the next year, passengers will still board a few planes painted with US Airways’ livery. American threw goodbye parties at Phoenix Sky Harbor worldwide Airport and other cities on the route Friday, drawing hundreds of employees, passengers and aviation geeks, most with smartphone cameras in hand to capture the arrival and departure of the Airbus A321 and the festivities.
