Hard-disk drive maker Western Digital Corp agreed to buy SanDisk Corp in a $19 billion deal that will greatly increase its ability to make flash memory storage chips used in smartphones and tablets.
Sandisk has been Reuterstrying to market itself for some time now, and analysts had predicted that the hard drive manufacturer would be one of the best fits for acquiring the NAND technology that Sandisk has focused on.
This deal is the most recent in a series of semiconductor mergers and buyouts this year.
